Cu 2 zile inainte de alegeri, Obama si vicepresedintele Joe Biden au venit la Cleveland. Ohio (Cuyahoga County) este foarte important in cursa electorala, fiind considerat un fel de “stat – esantion” pentru rezultatul alegerilor si o cheie a victoriei. La final, el a indemnat fiecare participant sa se gindeasca la cinci persoane pe care le cunoaste si despre care stie ca nu vor participa la votul de marti. “Ginditi-va la cinci persoane, care dintr-un motiv sau altul nu vor merge la vot. Luati-va raspunderea sa le convingeti sa vina la vot pentru a impinge America inainte. Nu uitati, cinci persoane, fiecare dintre voi. Cinci persoane. Nu uitati ca a fi activist, a fi cetatean, inseamna a fi responsabil si pentru cei din jur. Asumati-va raspunderea si aduceti cinci persoane la vot, fiecare dintre voi”. Trebuie sa spun ca m-a impresionat acest sfat repetat obsesiv de Brown. Absenteismul este considerat acum marele dusman al democratilor.

Au mai vorbit guvernatorul statului Ohio Ted Strickland, alti congressmani, un reprezentant al studentilor. Apoi a venit pe scena vicepresedintele Biden, care l-a prezentat pe Obama. Discursurile lor s-au centrat pe ideea ca daca democratii pierd marti Congresul, America va face un pas inapoi. De altfel, sloganul mitingului si al intregii campanii a fost “Moving America Forward”.

Obama a avut citeva puncte cheie in discursul sau: ideea ca America trebuie sa isi mentina rolul de lider in lume (“we play for the first place in the world”), investitii masive in cercetarea stiintifica, educatie si sanatate. In opinia sa, fara aceste prioritati – Cercetare, Educatie, Sanatate – America nu poate aspira la locul intii in lume. Obama a reamintit alegatorilor ca republicanii vor sa faca economii la bugetul federal taind bugetul la Educatie si Cercetare cu 20% “Credeti ca China ar proceda astfel? Credeti ca Germania ar proceda astfel? America nu joaca pentru locul 20 in lume, ci pentru locul I”, a spus presedintele . El i-a asigurat pe alegatori ca America nu se va mai confrunta cu a doua criza economica (“our economy is growing”) si a accentuat apoi importanta reformei pentru sanatate publica.

Asa va fi oare? La mitingul de ieri au venit circa 8.000 de oameni, potrivit estimrilor din presa locala, astfel ca multe locuri ramasesera neocupate in sala de sport de la Wolstein Center. Se va repeta absenteismul si la votul de pe 2 noiembrie? In orice caz, multi au votat in avans.
