Scoala de Management, Cleveland, designed by Frank Gehry. Este numita insa "Peter B. Lewis Building" dupa numele celui care a donat 36,9 mil dolari pt constructia sa.
La Case Western Reserve University, “one of the nation’s top universities” (cum suna sloganul institutiei), scoala incepe la 23 august. Asta inseamna ca pe 23 incep cursurile, adica rutina obisnuita, care inseamna mut studiu individual si multe proiecte. Studentii insa trebuie sa fie prezenti cu o saptamina mai devreme, pentru a frecventa Orientation classes, adica orele de initiere in serviciile universitatii, de cunoastere a cerintelor si asteptarilor, a oprtunitatilor de studiu, cercetare, cariera. Sint trei tipuri de orientation classes pe care le-am parcurs inaintea inceperii scolii: pentru studentii straini, pentru studenti in general – structurate pe doua categorii – undergraduate si graduate students – si pentru fiecare specializare in parte, in cazul meu, un MA in Bioetica. Orientation classes cuprind si ceea ce in Romania inseamna “festivitati”, in sensul ca aici vorbeste presedintele, rectorul, vicepresedinti si vicerectori. Insa partea festiva este minora in economia de timp a cursurilor, care inseamna ore intregi de pregatire, in care zeci de reprezentanti ai tuturor serviciilor si departamentelor din universitate vin pe rind la pupitru cu powe-pointuri si slide-uri in care toarna informatii cu galeata. De fapt am avut o conferinta in toata regula, timp de doua zile, despre ce inseamna sa fii student la Case.

Cel mai putin a durat Orientation-ul pentru studentii straini: aproximativ 2 ore. Directorul Departamentului pentru studenti straini si coordonatoarea programului din acelasi serviciu ne-au vorbit aici despre pasii ce trebuie parcursi pentru a intra “in legalitate” la toate capitolele, de la certificate de asigurare medicala, social security number, banking account, ID student card, nu in ultimul rind inregistrarea online pentru fiecare curs in parte. In mapele de prezentare am primit materiale cu indicatii practice, harti, sfaturi, plus cartile de vizita ale directorilor Serviciului de studenti straini al Universitatii, unde sint trecute inclusiv numerele de telefon de acasa, asa, just in case!
Partea a doua a orientarii pentru straini a constat intr-un cocktail combinat cu un fel de tirg al ofertelor de servicii si al evenimentelor din campus. Enumar aici calendarul serilor asiatice la restaurante cu specific, harta si calendarul evenimentelor culturale din University Circle, Un fluturas cu metode de aparare impotriva infractorilor, harta cu traseele autobuzului Health Line, harta campusului, oferte de cazare, oferte de excursii in comunitatea Amish, la cascada Niagara, oferte de socializare in familii americane de Thanksgiving si Labor Day, Craciun si Anul Nou, invitatii la ceremonii religioase in diversele comunitati protestante, catolice sau ortodoxe, nu in ultimul rind invitatii la picnicuri studentesti organizate de Senatul studentilor chiar in campus. Un accent deosebit a fost pus pe serviciile de consiliere psihologica in caz de singuratate, dor de casa, depresie, anxietate. De fapt, toate ofertele si serviciile incurajeaza networkingul, prieteniile, petrecerile in grup, pentru a asigura un confort psihic cit mai ridicat studentilor veniti de la mare distanta. Despre cele opt ore de Orientation pentru Graduate Students, voi vorbi cu o alta ocazie.
